I went walking on a summer’s day...

We're having such a glorious summer, I thought I'd post this. It's just one stanza from a poem called 'I Went Walking' that has four stanzas, each one describing a month of the year. You'll have to wait until autumn for the next one!

I went walking on a summer’s day,

“And what did you see?” I hear you say.

I saw the sun up in the sky,

Egg yolk golden shining high.

I saw children riding bikes.

I saw toddlers on trikes.

I saw ladies under brollies,

Sitting shaded eating lollies,

Slurping ice-cream, strawberry pink,

Ice cubes clinking in a cold drink.

I saw small birds fly, swiftly by,

Catching insects, skimming the sky,

Loop the looping, swallows swooping

Past  foxgloves and purple lupins.

I saw people trying to stay cool;

I’m glad I’ve got a paddling pool!
